Darwin Deez
at Market Hotel

Darwin Deez is led by a young man named Darwin Smith who writes, arranges, produces, and records hazy music that's hugged with reverb and sha-la-la-las. Smith is joined in Darwin Deez by Andrew Hoepfner (bass/backing vocals) and Z. Cole Smith (guitar) and the group describes its music as "happy music for sad people" and "indie rock with a side of calisthenics."

Phil Lester, music critic for the Guardian, described the group's music as such: "If Dinosaur Jr were a brainy indie-disco troupe fronted by a permanently befuddled J Mascis with a frizzy perm influenced by Devo and the Dazz Band, they'd sound like Darwin Deez." Well, okay, then.

Darwin has been spending a considerable amount of time on the road recently, especially in Europe where his other band Creaky Boards (which also includes Hoepfner) became an unexpected sensation when they posted a video to YouTube claiming that Coldplay ripped off a song of their's titled, appropriately, "The Songs I Didn't Write." On the evening that this video was shot, though, Darwin Deez was at home in Brooklyn playing the popular DIY music club Market Hotel.
